Southampton Station
QMS Complete a package of works for Balfour Beatty as part of a rejuvenation scheme at Southampton Station.

QMS are no stranger to Balfour Beatty, working on many projects across the UK, from major DBFO networks incorporating the QMS HyperLine and QMS HyperGrip systems to small local sites in our home county of Devon.

When we were asked to get involved in a project just up the road in Southampton we were delighted to offer our services.

As part of the planned improvements, the station will see a new cruise passenger waiting lounge with real-time information, increased access to sustainable travel options, an improved taxi rank, drop-off facilities and improved car parking and loading facilities - we were ecstatic to be a part of it the exciting project which would transform the area and improve the facilities for 1000s of people!

MMA Colour Coating installed at Southampton Station

Part of the upgrade design was to have the designated disabled parking areas highlighted in blue, this area would be under an immense amount of stress as the vehicles have to drive across the marked area to enter the parking bays.

We used the highly durable MMA product that has some fantastic properties, including,

  • UV Stable, so it will stay nice and bright for the life of the product.
  • Cold-applied, so it is safer for the crew to install than a hot-applied product.
  • Extra grippy, which we think is important given the location.

We finished it off with our preformed thermoplastic lettering, like the icing on the cake this is the part people will be looking at the most so it's important that they are uniform and neat. (Find out more about the benefits of MMA in our blog post, 'what is MMA road marking and its benefits?')

QMS Highways installation at Southampton Station

If you ask any person in the line marking industry what their favourite surface to install markings on is, it will probably be freshly laid tarmac.

After the completion of the highways surfacing on the A3024, Western Esplanade, the line marking crew swooped into action and installed the new thermoplastic markings to the new layout. This included installing various road markings; double yellow lines, centreline markings, pedestrian crossing and some pretty tasty lettering that looked so good it could have been printed, only better!

QMS HyperGrip installed at Southampton Station

What's worse than not knowing where you are going? Not Stopping?

The final cherry on the cake was to install nearly 700m2 of Buff and 70m2 of grey QMS HyperGrip, the cold applied resin remains flexible allowing it to move with the surface underneath, this stops the longitudinal and transverse cracking and the best part is it can be applied all year round.

High Friction Surface Treatments are a key safety upgrade to any network, and it is generally found on the approach to crossings, traffic lights and even dangerous bends which is why we offer a FIVE-YEAR GUARANTEE when applied to a new surface.

With the foot traffic that the upgraded station will generate the HyperGrip system will help towards ensuring the safety of the public when using the fantastic station.
