LifeLine™ – Technical and Environmental Product Overview

Technical Sheet

Introduction

LifeLine™ is a sophisticated data collection service that measures the retro-reflectivity performance of road markings and road studs across any given network.

Travelling at normal traffic speeds within speed restrictions, the LaserLux LLG7 retro-reflectometer is mounted to a survey vehicle using suction brackets. Capable of operating in daylight or night-time conditions, the system scans the road surface 400 times per second, producing average readings at pre-determined intervals (typically every 100 m on carriageways and every 50 m on slip roads).

A forward-facing high-definition video camera records each route, seamlessly linking video footage to survey results. Output is split into easy-to-view 5-minute segments, enabling users to pinpoint exact carriageway sections referenced in the data. Road studs are also individually assessed for retro-reflective performance and logged within the results tables.

Survey results are produced instantly on completion and supplied in multiple formats:

  • Excel spreadsheets with data tables and graphs
  • CSV and shapefiles for GIS integration
  • KML files for viewing in Google Earth
  • All seamlessly linked with GPS accuracy

Technical Description

System Operation

  • Laser scanning: 400 measurements per second.
  • Adjustable mounting: quick-fit suction brackets allow placement on either side of the vehicle.
  • Data resolution: configurable to 100 m carriageway intervals or 50 m on slip roads.
  • Road stud analysis: retro-reflectivity logged individually with GPS accuracy.

Data Integration

  • Results presented in Excel, GIS-compatible shapefiles, CSV, and KML.
  • Linked to high-definition video with 5-minute playback segments.
  • Full GPS referencing for precise asset management.

Locations of Use

LifeLine™ is designed for use on any section of the network with longitudinal road markings, including:

  • Motorways and Dual Carriageways
  • Slip roads
  • Urban arterial routes
  • Rural highways

The system can be mounted on either side of the survey vehicle, ensuring accurate measurement of both near-side and off-side markings.

Performance

QMS LifeLine™ meets the requirements of CS 126 for retro-reflectivity testing.

Health & Safety Benefits

  • Lightweight, single-person installation with suction mounting brackets.
  • Power supply via the vehicle’s auxiliary system.
  • Single operator surveying possible due to intuitive controls.
  • Surveys completed at normal traffic speeds, avoiding the need for physical traffic management.
  • Surveying is carried out entirely from within the traffic lane, without the need to straddle the white line, further improving operative safety.

Daily Shift Outputs

  • Up to 500 km of carriageway tested and recorded per 8-hour shift

Surface Preparation

There is no specific surface preparation required for LifeLine™ retro-reflectivity testing. However, the surface must be dry for accurate measurement.

Client Benefits

LifeLine™ provides road authorities and asset managers with powerful insights:

  • Enables targeted intervention by identifying underperforming markings.
  • Supports forward maintenance planning to maintain compliance with national standards.
  • Reduces unnecessary re-marking by focusing resources on sections most in need.
  • Video-linked results provide transparency and traceability for decision-making.

Environmental Benefits

  • Surveys are carried out at normal traffic speeds without the need for convoy traffic management, reducing vehicle idling and congestion-related emissions.
  • Targeted maintenance planning ensures materials are only used where required, preventing unnecessary over-marking and reducing carbon and microplastic impacts from road marking activities.

Conclusion

LifeLine™ is an advanced, non-intrusive retro-reflectivity testing service that provides:

  • Accurate, GPS-linked measurements of road markings and studs.
  • Seamless data integration, with Excel, GIS, and video-linked reporting.
  • Compliance with CS 126, ensuring consistent national standards.
  • Safe and efficient surveying at traffic speed, with no requirement for traffic management.
  • Environmental benefits, through reduced waste, lower carbon impact, and smarter maintenance planning.

By adopting LifeLine™, asset managers gain a reliable, cost-effective, and sustainable method of monitoring road marking and road stud performance, ensuring safer networks for road users.
