Sports Court Transformation At Torquay Girls Grammar School

QMS helped to completely transform Torquay Girls Grammar School’s outdoor sports court with state-of-the-art resurfacing solutions and line marking. Helping to improve the sports court facilities and functions in all seasons.

QMS were asked to visit Torquay Girls Grammar School to see if they could help transform the appearance and function of their existing sports courts. With our years of experience and expertise, we were able to complete the project within a specified time frame, reducing the impact our work would have on the school’s curriculum and timetable.

Torquay Sports Court Line Markings

Our team of Torquay line marking specialists were more than happy to help the school and improve the existing facilities for the staff and students to enjoy. The school had been using a hard and unforgiving concrete surfacing for the sports courts, which were used as multi-sport areas. With lines available for football, netball, tennis and badminton courts.

The school wanted to resurface the area with shock and slip-resistant surfacing, to protect students whilst playing either during lesson times, sports practice or during their break times. The project was split into several phases:

Phase 1: Preparing the sports court for fresh line marking

Before the team could get to work on the re-lining of the existing sports court, they had to make sure the court was properly prepped. This initial stage is fundamental in the relining of sports courts and helps ensure the longevity of the finished project and is smooth, clean and ready for action.

To prepare the surface for the relining of the sports court, the team completed the following:

  • Swept the sports court to remove any debris
  • Jet washed the sports court to remove any stuck on dirt
  • Repaired any damages sections of the surface

In this case, the team didn’t need to remove the existing line markings, as the school were happy with their existing layout, but if they were, the team would also remove the line markings using ‘EnviroBlast’ for the line removal of the existing sports court markings.

This system removes the unwanted markings by using a recovered shot blast, whilst simultaneously vacuuming up all of the dust and particles from the removed lines.

Phase 2: Binder coats

A binder coat is the ‘surface regulator coat’ which not only holds the sports court surface together, but also helps the super bright coloured coating adhere to the surface court is applied to the court.

Phase 3: Colour Coating

After the binder coat has dried, two coats of the main surface colour (in this case green) is added to the court. This product is water-based so no nasty VOC`s (volatile organic compounds) or bad smells which has a high slip-resitant value (SRV), making it a perfect product for school playgrounds and sports courts.

Phase 4: Line marking

When the new surface colour had dried , the next stage was to install accurate sports court line markings in varying colours. The lines are installed at 50mm wide and with a sprinkling of ‘glass bead grain’ to make sure that the lines have a high slip-resistant value as well.

In the space available on the court, the team were able to create two courts with the following markings installed:

  • Netball
  • Tennis

To ensure the markings were installed accurately, the team first pre-marked where the line markings were going to be installed using the QMS GPS robot, Nigel, before confirming the positions were correct. Once confirmed, the team first installed the white tennis markings, before repeating the process with the yellow netball markings.

Phase 5: Get set, go

The sports court and its fresh line marking is now ready for the children to enjoy and practise their skills, to get them one step closer to Wimbledon.
