ColdMark™ – Technical and Environmental Product Overview

Introduction

ColdMark™ represents a new generation of high-performance, cold-applied road marking technology. Developed for both screed (hand and machine) and spray-applied applications, it delivers superior durability, enhanced visibility, and measurable environmental benefits.

The system is based on a two-component Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) resin formulation combined with embedded miniature glass spheres (beads). This unique chemistry provides exceptionally high levels of retroreflectivity that remain consistent and sustainable throughout the product’s lifecycle.

Technical Description

Precision Application

  • Machine-applied systems utilise electronically controlled equipment with built-in speed regulation and automatic dosage control. This ensures a consistent, precise blend of resin and hardener across every metre of installation.
  • Glass bead application is electronically calibrated to guarantee uniform distribution, delivering optimum embedment and long-lasting retro-reflectivity.

Bead Technology

The glass beads have a unique specialist coating that enhances adhesion and embedment within the binder. This ensures consistent optical performance and sustains high retro-reflectivity for the full operational life of the marking.

Colours and Customisation

ColdMark™ is available as standard in white and yellow, with additional colours supplied subject to minimum order volumes.

Locations of Use

  • Machine Screed – Designed for carriageway installations where no markings exist or where existing markings have deteriorated beyond recognition.
  • Hand Screed – Ideal for ancillary and detailed markings such as arrows, letters, symbols, and junctions, particularly where replacement of heavily worn markings is required.
  • Spray – Intended for refurbishing worn markings or first-time applications in low-traffic areas such as waiting restrictions. It effectively restores colour, visibility, and retro-reflectivity without the need for full removal.

Health & Safety Benefits

Unlike traditional thermoplastic systems, ColdMark™ is applied without heat. This innovation delivers:

  • Zero burn risk to operatives, removing one of the most common injuries in line marking.
  • Improved public safety, particularly in urban areas where freshly laid thermoplastic can remain dangerously hot.
  • Simplified logistics, with no need for fuel-based burners or heated applicators.

Daily Shift Outputs

  • Machine Screed – Up to 500 m² per 8-hour shift
  • Machine Spray – Up to 500 m² per 8-hour shift
  • Hand Screed – Up to 100 m² per 8-hour shift

(500 m² equates to approximately 5,000 m of 100 mm wide line or 2,500 m of 200 mm wide line.)

Surface Preparation

The surface to receive ColdMark™ is to be clean, dry and free from contaminates such as dirt, grease, oils and road salt.

Pre-cleaning of the surface using mechanical sweeping or forced drying would be determined during a pre-site inspection.

Calculation of the dew point is critical for any surface treatment installation. This is determined by calculating the air temperature together with the humidity. In situations where the ground temperature is below the calculated dew point, forced drying and heating of the road surface is usually possible to maintain progress for installation.

Guarantee and Life Expectancy

  • Guaranteed Performance – 24 months
  • Typical Life Expectancy – 36 to 60 months, depending on traffic conditions and site location.

This extended service life results in reduced maintenance interventions, lower whole-life costs, and measurable sustainability benefits.

Ongoing Maintenance

ColdMark™ can be overmarked without removal, allowing a new layer to be applied directly onto the existing marking. This avoids unnecessary waste generation, reduces surface disturbance and minimises microplastic impact.

Environmental Benefits

Carbon Footprint Reduction

ColdMark™ eliminates the need for fossil-fuel heating, dramatically lowering carbon emissions. For 1,000 m² of road marking over a ten-year lifecycle, comparative studies show:

  • ColdMark™ Screed: 14,880 kg CO₂
  • ColdMark™ Spray: 16,560 kg CO₂
  • Thermoplastic Screed: 39,200 kg CO₂
  • Thermoplastic Spray: 19,600 kg CO₂

This represents a 62% CO₂ reduction for screed and a 16% reduction for spray when compared to thermoplastic.

Material Savings and Microplastic Reduction

Road markings contribute up to 7% of ocean microplastics worldwide. ColdMark™ addresses this through reduced material usage and extended lifecycle:

  • ColdMark™ Screed – 12,000 kg over ten years
  • ColdMark™ Spray – 9,000 kg over ten years
  • Thermoplastic Screed – 30,000 kg over ten years
  • Thermoplastic Spray – 15,000 kg over ten years

This results in a reduction of 18,000 kg (60%) for screed and 6,000 kg (40%) for spray, significantly lowering the potential for microplastic release into marine environments.
