Introduction

EcoRib PLUS™ is a premium edge line road marking system engineered to provide outstanding safety, visibility, and durability. It is constructed from a two-component Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) cold-applied viscous resin designed for long-term performance.

The system integrates high refractive index glass beads, broadcast onto the MMA binder through a mechanically controlled and calibrated process. This ensures exceptionally high retro-reflectivity in both dry and wet night conditions, delivering reliable visibility for road users.

Once cured, EcoRib PLUS™ forms a structured ribbed profile at precisely defined intervals. The ribs increase night-time visibility in dry and wet conditions and provide a tactile and audible rumble effect, alerting drivers when vehicles drift from their lane.

EcoRib PLUS™ is installed using advanced, computer-controlled equipment to ensure rib spacing, height, and width remain accurate and compliant with regulatory standards.

Technical Description

Precision Application

  • Application is performed with electronically controlled machines calibrated for rib spacing, height, and width.
  • Installation is fully compliant with TSRGD Diagrams 1012.2 and 1012.3.
  • The controlled broadcast of high-index glass beads ensures sustainable retro-reflectivity throughout the system’s service life.

Bead Technology

EcoRib PLUS™ incorporates miniature glass beads with a high refractive index, embedded into the MMA binder. This results in consistent optical performance and enhanced visibility under challenging wet-night conditions.

Colours and Customisation

Available in standard white, with other colours available subject to minimum order requirements.

Locations of Use

EcoRib PLUS™ has been developed for use following new surfacing projects or where no previous edge line marking has been installed. It is suitable for both Motorways and Dual Carriageways, with rib profiles electronically controlled to ensure full compliance with TSRGD requirements.

Performance

EcoRib PLUS™ has been rigorously tested and achieved Road Trial Certification with the following BS1436 performance levels:

  • P5, R3, RR2, RW2, S2, Q2

Retro-reflectivity results consistently exceed 500 mcd/m²/lux, providing superior durability and long-term performance.

Health & Safety Benefits

EcoRib PLUS™ is a fully cold-applied system with no requirement for heat in materials, tools, or equipment. This ensures:

  • Zero burn risk to operatives, eliminating the hazards associated with thermoplastic systems.
  • Increased safety for the public, with no residual hot surfaces after installation.
  • Simplified application logistics, with no need for fossil-fuel heating equipment.

Surface Preparation

The surface to receive EcoRib PLUS™ is to be clean, dry and free from contaminates such as dirt, grease, oils and road salt.

Pre-cleaning of the surface using mechanical sweeping or forced drying would be determined during a pre-site inspection.

Calculation of the dew point is critical for any surface treatment installation. This is determined by calculating the air temperature together with the humidity. In situations where the ground temperature is below the calculated dew point, forced drying and heating of the road surface is usually possible to maintain progress for installation.

EcoRib PLUS™ provides an extended service life with consistently high retro-reflectivity.

Ongoing Maintenance

When EcoRib PLUS™ performance begins to decline but remains above specification minimums, it can be oversprayed with QMS HyperLine™ ULTRA to restore high retro-reflectivity.

There is no requirement to remove the rib structure after installation. Rib height will remain above 6 mm (Motorways) and 3 mm (Dual Carriageways) for the full functional life of the road surface. This reduces waste, minimises surface disturbance and limits the release of ocean microplastics.

Environmental Benefits

Carbon Footprint Reduction

EcoRib PLUS™ avoids fossil-fuel heating, directly reducing CO₂ emissions. For 1,000 m² of road marking, comparative analysis shows:

  • EcoRib PLUS™: 9,920 kg CO₂
  • Thermoplastic: 10,080 kg CO₂

This delivers an initial saving of 160 kg CO₂ (2%).

Over a ten-year period, including maintenance oversprays:

  • EcoRib PLUS™ (1 HyperLine™ ULTRA visit): 10,361 kg CO₂
  • Thermoplastic (3 oversprays): 21,840 kg CO₂

This equates to a 53% reduction (11,479 kg CO₂ saved) per 1,000 m².

Material Savings and Microplastic Reduction

Road markings account for up to 7% of global ocean microplastics. EcoRib PLUS™ addresses this by extending life expectancy and reducing material demand:

  • EcoRib PLUS™: 9,700 kg (initial application + one overspray)
  • Thermoplastic: 19,000 kg (initial application + three oversprays)

This results in a 9,300 kg (49%) reduction in material usage per 1,000 m² (5,000 m of 200 mm wide line).

Applied to the UK’s estimated 29,000,000 metres of profiled edge line, EcoRib PLUS™ could prevent 53,940 tonnes of material entering the environment every decade.
