Introduction

HyperGrip™ is a High Friction Surface Treatment (HFST), certified to BBA HAPAS Type 1 approval (certificate number 15/H233) and fully aligned with the requirements of the new BS 8870 standard.

The system is based on a two-component Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) base resin combined with high-performance bauxite aggregate. It has been engineered to retain flexibility after curing, minimising the risk of perimeter and transverse cracking. This greatly reduces the likelihood of pothole formation and ensures a more durable road surface.

HyperGrip™ is applied using weight-controlled delivery units, ensuring each resin batch is mixed and delivered consistently. The wet resin is covered with bauxite aggregate applied to excess, which during the one-hour cure period settles into the binder, forming a 5–6 mm textured matrix. This creates a surface texture above 70 PSV, delivering exceptionally high levels of skid resistance and non-slip performance.

Once cured, the treated area is swept with mechanical and suction equipment to remove any loose aggregate, leaving a robust surface ready for immediate traffic use.

Certified for use on new black-top surfaces just 12 hours after surfacing, HyperGrip™ significantly reduces installation times, minimising disruption for road users and maximising efficiency of traffic management.

System Composition

  • Base resin – Two-component MMA formulation engineered for flexibility and long-term durability.
  • Aggregate – High-quality bauxite with a PSV >70, embedded in excess to lock into the resin and deliver reliable skid resistance.
  • Matrix depth – 5–6 mm cured film thickness, ensuring robust long-term performance.

Application Method

  • Weight-controlled mixing and delivery from calibrated installation units.
  • Aggregate applied to excess, then cured into resin to create non-slip surface.
  • Loose aggregate recovered and re-used through sieving and cleaning, reducing waste.

Surface Preparation

The surface to receive HyperGrip™ is to be clean, dry and free from contaminates such as dirt, grease, oils and road salt.

Pre-cleaning of the surface using high pressure water, shot blasting, mechanical sweeping or forced drying would be determined during a pre-site inspection.

Calculation of the dew point is critical for any surface treatment installation. This is determined by calculating the air temperature together with the humidity. In situations where the ground temperature is below the calculated dew point, forced drying and heating of the road surface is usually possible to maintain progress for installation.

The durability of HyperGrip™ ensures a long service life and minimal disruption during its operational period.

Ongoing Maintenance

Very little maintenance is required to keep HyperGrip™ performing at its optimum. The bauxite aggregate is locked within the resin binder, maintaining skid resistance throughout the system’s life.

In most applications, the treatment will not require replacement before the underlying road substrate itself requires resurfacing.

This extended performance reduces whole-life costs, minimises traffic disruption, and ensures safer roads.

Environmental Benefits

Carbon Footprint Reduction

By eliminating the requirement for heated equipment, HyperGrip™ avoids fossil fuel consumption during installation.

Resin and aggregate usage:

  • Base resin: 2.5 kg/m² → 4.5 kg CO₂/m²
  • Aggregate: 8 kg/m² → 20 kg CO₂/m²
  • Combined: 24.5 kg CO₂/m²

Example calculation:

  • 300 m² installation = 7,350 kg CO₂ total

Over a 15-year operational life, this equates to:

  • 1.63 kg CO₂ per m² per year
  • 489 kg CO₂ per annum for a standard 300 m² pedestrian crossing scheme

Material Efficiency and Waste Reduction

  • Excess bauxite aggregate is mechanically swept, sieved, and re-used, preventing unnecessary disposal.
  • With a 12–15 year life expectancy, HyperGrip™ dramatically reduces maintenance cycles and associated material use compared to shorter-life alternatives.
